Chat
Ask questions in plain language. Answers come from governed datasets.
In short
Chat answers questions in plain language, such as "Why did revenue drop last month?", from your governed datasets and document collections. It only uses the datasets and collections you are allowed to use with AI, and it shows how each answer was built. It looks in gold datasets first, then silver, then the rest.
Asking a question
Write your question as you would to a colleague. Chat:
- finds the datasets that can answer it;
- writes and runs read-only SQL queries on them;
- explains the result, and can show it as a table or a chart.
Every answer has a How this answer was built panel: the datasets analysed, the SQL executed with the number of rows returned, and the documents used. Every figure in an answer comes from one of those queries.
Conversations are saved. Find them in the history, and filter it by source to see everything you asked about one dataset.
Choosing the sources
By default, Chat chooses the datasets and collections itself, among those you can use. You can steer it:
- Type @ to link a dataset or a document collection to the conversation. Linked resources are shown above the conversation.
- Turn on Restrict to selected to answer only from the linked resources, with no search across the rest of your organization.
Gold first
When no source is selected, Chat looks for the answer in this order:
- gold datasets, ready for the business;
- then silver datasets;
- then every other dataset you can use.
When an answer does not rest on a gold dataset, the answer says so: Not based on a gold dataset. Read it with more care, or ask your data team for a gold dataset on the subject.
Documents
Chat also searches your document collections. When it answers from documents, it uses only what the excerpts say, cites the documents by name, and says plainly when they do not contain the answer.
The chat bubble
On a dataset's or a collection's page, a chat bubble answers from that resource only.
- It resumes your latest conversation about that resource; New conversation starts another one.
- Open in Chat continues the conversation in the full Chat page, still limited to that resource.
What Chat does not do
- It never reads a dataset or a collection you cannot use with AI: your team needs the Ask AI right on it.
- It does not answer from deprecated datasets.
- It only reads data: it never changes your data.
- It does not invent numbers. If the data does not answer the question, it says what it could not determine.
Chat also needs the Chat feature in your organization role, and a platform administrator can turn it off for the whole platform.
FAQ
Why doesn't Chat find a dataset I can see in the catalogue? Seeing a dataset and asking AI about it are two different rights. Your team needs Ask AI on the dataset.
Can I check the SQL behind an answer? Yes. Open How this answer was built under the answer.
In which language does Chat answer? In the language you write in.
